FIVE THINGS I LOVE ABOUT CHRISTMAS
It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and I absolutely love all things festive! I spend all year looking forward to Christmas because there’s nothing I don’t love about this time of year! Here are the top five things I love about the festive season!
Christmas Movies
I love Christmas films! I will watch anything that has “Christmas’ in the title! I can’t bring myself to watch them in the summer months, but as soon as September starts I get excited about Christmas films starting to sneak in on TV. There’s a warm and cosy feeling about Christmas films that you just don’t get from summer films. They’re perfect for dull rainy days and cold winter nights. My absolute favorite Christmas film of all time is National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, but I also love Elf, The Santa Clause, It’s a wonderful life, and so many more! Another aspect of Christmas movies that I love are the Hallmark-type made-for-TV festive romances that are on all the time from October to January! We’re spoilt in the UK in that, we get them on multiple channels and the selection is endless! I could watch these escapist romances endlessly and never get tired of them! Always guaranteed to put a smile on my face! My favorite are A Christmas Kiss, Window Wonderland, A Very Merry Mix-up, The most Wonderful Time of the Year, A Gift for Christmas, The Spirit of Christmas, and many, many more!
Christmas Music
While plenty of Grinches complain about Christmas music being played too early I love it! I can’t wait until the shops start playing it, the festive adverts start on the TV, and the music channels start doing 24 hours a day of Christmas music! I never get fed up of it, even when Driving Home For Christmas has been on 27,038 times before December 2nd! I think because we only hear it for two months a year, there’s enough time between seasons to appreciate the nostalgia of it! I love hearing all these old songs that have been around for years – songs I remember listening to as a child – and are still going strong all these years later! My absolute favorite Christmas song is My favorite time of Year by The Florin Street Band.
Christmas Food
I am obsessed with Christmas food! There’s something special about food that you can only get for a few months a year! Again, people will complain about shops putting it out too early, but I cannot wait for the first mince pie in September! Every year I can’t wait to see what limited edition Christmas-themed goodies will be coming out. I buy them all as soon as I can get my hands on them – they have to be ‘tested thoroughly’ before Christmas, after all! I love a mince pie, but I love all the chocolate there is too! Bring on the Reese’s peanut butter Christmas trees, the Cadbury’s Snowballs and Jingly Bells and bars of Winter Wonderland and Snowy Fingers and giant tubs of Roses and Quality Street! Bring on the fruit cake with layers of marzipan and white icing on top of it! Gimme the nut selections and the tangerines and the chestnuts roasting in the oven! I’ll even try the Christmas cake flavored Wensleydale cheese and the pine tree flavored crisps! I am every festive marketing executive’s dream buyer. I will try anything Christmassy!
Christmas Books
I’ve written a Christmas book for a few years in a row now, and I am of course writing one again this year, and I can’t imagine the winter months without writing one! I can’t wait to escape into a snowy world brimming with Christmas magic!
I love Christmas books as a reader too though. There is nothing better than a cosy, warm, wintery read when you’re snuggled up inside on a rainy day with a hot water bottle, a blanket fluffy socks and a hot chocolate with whipped cream! Of course I love summer books too, but Christmas books have a shimmer of magic that can’t be replicated in beach reads! My kindle is stuffed full of Christmas books this year, and I can’t wait for some cosy nights in to read them all!
Christmas Decorations
Who doesn’t love Christmas decorations ? Seeing Christmas lights twinkling on a dark night makes me happy! The unmistakable metallic smell of tinsel, and the sense of nostalgia that comes with getting out decorations that you haven’t seen for a year, and are often old things that you’ve had for years and bring back happy memories of Christmases past…..
I also have a particular fondness for nutcrackers! I’ve collected them for years, and although I have a life-size one that stays out all year round (because, honestly, it’s so big that I have nowhere else to put it!) I look forward to getting some of my collection out every year! I love the story behind them, of a prince who was turned into a wooden soldier and can only be restored to life by finding someone to love him as he is, and the magical festive ballet that’s an annual tradition for so many people! I can only hope that this year The Little Christmas Shop on Nutcracker Lane will inspire people to invite a nutcracker into their own lives!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
