It is easy to sell your soul (for someone)

The Accidental Accountant is the story of a young and confused final year student, Deb who wanted to pursue MBA in one of the famous IIM’s in the country. But Deb’s mediocre performance in the MBA entrance examination marks the end of his dream.

The idea of becoming an accountant sprouts out through his uncle’s suggestion and the clueless Deb decides to take up this new path as an accountant in one of the reputed firms in the city. But doing a job of an accountant is definitely not a cakewalk for Deb, it takes a mountain of hard work and humiliation and loss of self respect.

Is taking up this job in the first place was Deb’s true calling or did he just made a great mistake by biting more than he could actually chew ?

REVIEW

The author had aptly selected the title for this book. The title, more or less gives a detailed and clear insight about what kind of plot, one can expect from this book. The book traces the journey of Deb who is in the final year of his college. He is under lot of pressure because of the expectations levied on him from his family and society.

This book clearly showcases what are the feelings a student undergoes right before finishing his/her college. The author had beautifully captured the anxiety and pressure felt by a student who has no idea about their future. It also shows how responsible each and every youngster is, despite their carefree nature, which how youngsters are portrayed to e time and again.

The way the book started was extremely catchy and anyone could relate to it immediately. The author has also explained things about MBA exams and the folks who undertake those exams pretty much vividly. The parts where he spoke about taxes and other technical terms were also very authentic and professional but the author could have avoided those high hand jargon and opted for some easier terms for layman to understand a little bit deeply.

The book was sharp and onto the point, there was no unnecessary buttering to make it commercialize. It was a short and crisp and it was a quick read. How the book started and marched forward was really appreciable but it felt like somewhere around the corner the author had slightly lost track of the plot and spoke about few non-focal points which could have been avoided.

There were a lot characters in the book, the author introduced new characters on every other page. For such a short book, it is not required to have included so many characters. It was quite confusing to keep track of all the characters in the book. It would have been more than enough to have had 2 or 3 support characters with distinct characteristics.

The best part about this book is, how the author had characterized the protagonist’s character. The struggles he had to face to fit into a competitive corporate world where practically everything is new to him was written down realistically. His sense of commitment towards doing his duty compassionately and his honesty and his desire to always do the right thing was really appreciable. It was seriously evident that these characteristic of the protagonist will definitely make him reach heights.

MY VIEWS

The Accidental Accountant was so very relatable to me despite the fact that I’m not an accountant or an Economics major but the feeling this book exhibited was really personal and akin. And I guess most of the youngster in India would be able to relate to this book.

I always say this, books will happen to you when you needed them the most and this was one such book for me!

My rating for this book would be 2.5 out of 5 stars

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.
